The algorithm is shaping your children more than you know. Here is the biblical framework for raising disciples in the AI age — faith woven into daily life.
The most important faith formation that will ever happen in your child's life is not going to happen at church.
It is going to happen at your dinner table, in the car on the way to school, at bedtime when they ask the questions that catch you off guard, and in the ordinary moments when they watch how you respond to difficulty.
And right now — competing for those same moments — is the most sophisticated attention-capturing technology ever built.
THE ALGORITHM IS ALREADY FORMING YOUR CHILDREN
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 describes the parenting vision God declared: "These commandments are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."
The Hebrew word for "impress" is shānan — to sharpen, to engrave. Moses is describing faith formation that cuts deep — not Sunday morning religion but a daily, consistent, multi-contextual transmission of God's truth that shapes how children see and interpret everything.
The algorithm is doing the same thing — just with different content and far more hours per day.
Most children spend 4-7 hours daily with screens that are actively teaching them who to be, what to value, what beauty looks like, what success means, and what constitutes a good life. Their faith formation, by comparison, gets a fraction of that time and competes against an opposing voice that is extraordinarily well-funded and algorithmically sophisticated.
FIVE PRINCIPLES FOR RAISING DISCIPLES IN THE DIGITAL AGE
Principle 1: Faith must be woven into daily rhythms — not added on top of them
The Deuteronomy 6 model is not a scheduled faith event. It is faith as the atmosphere of the home — present in the dinner conversation, in the car, in the questions at bedtime, in how you talk about money and relationships and difficulty and purpose. Not religion as a category. Faith as a foundation.
Principle 2: Have the AI conversation before the world does
Your children are already using AI tools or they will be soon. The question is not whether — but who shapes their framework for using them. Be the first voice to give them a faith-governed framework for navigating AI — what it can and cannot do, how your family's values govern your use of it, and why human thinking and faith are irreplaceable.
Principle 3: Build one consistent daily family faith practice
Five minutes at dinner — everyone shares one thing they are grateful for and one thing they are trusting God with. Do this for 30 consecutive days. The consistency of the practice teaches more than the content of any single lesson. And your children learn, in the most formative way possible, that faith is not separate from life — it is woven through it.
Principle 4: Be the model — not just the teacher
Your children will do what they watch you do far more reliably than what they hear you say. The parent who talks about prayer but does not pray is forming children who treat prayer as something adults talk about. The parent who actually prays — honestly, specifically, in front of their children — is forming children who know what genuine prayer looks like in a real life.
Principle 5: Create a family mission statement
Ask your children the questions. Let them contribute the words. Refine it together until everyone can recite it. A family that knows its mission navigates the world's competing narratives — including the algorithm's narrative — with significantly greater clarity.
